Is Equine Rabies Immunoglobulin better than Kamrab?

Equine Rabies Immunoglobulin is more economical as compared to Kamrab i.e., human rabies immunoglobulin (HRIG). Hence, it is more affordable to patients in developing countries, like India. However, Equine Rabies Immunoglobulin has a high potential to cause anaphylaxis (a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction), serum sickness and other allergic reactions and thus physicians are hesitant to use it.

Rabies is a 100% preventable disease. Proper wound management and simultaneous administration of Kamrab combined with anti-rabies vaccine (ARV) is almost invariably effective in preventing rabies, even after high-risk exposure.

Is Kamrab necessary?

Kamrab is not required for patients who have previously received a complete vaccination series of rabies.

Is Kamrab painful?

Whether Kamrab is painful or not depends on your pain tolerance. During your initial treatment, a healthcare professional will put Kamrab in the area where you were bitten. This can be painful. Therefore, a relatively greater amount of Kamrab may be required to be placed in and around the wound site to ease out your pain and treat infection.
