Betadine 10% Ointment can be used as an antiseptic to treat or prevent infections in wounds such as ulcers, small burns or cuts, and other minor injuries. However, take special care if you are applying Betadine 10% Ointment on open large wounds or where the skin is broken like burns. The reason being there may be a risk of excessive absorption of iodine in blood which may increase to toxic levels.

Can we use Betadine 10% for gargle?

Gargle or rinse with up to 10 ml of Betadine Gargle and Mouthwash for up to 30 seconds without swallowing. Repeat up to four times daily, for up to 14 days in a row, or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Do not use for more than 14 days.

Background: In the spring of 2000, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a ban on the use of Betadine (povidone-iodine; Purdue Frederick, Stamford, Conn.) in association with saline breast implants, because data seemed to indicate a higher rate of implant deflation in association with Betadine.
