Is Movicol a laxative or stool softener?
Movicol is one of a group of drugs called osmotic laxatives. These drugs attract and retain water in your stools, making them softer and easier to pass, thus reducing constipation. Movicol is indicated for the treatment of chronic constipation and also works in very bad constipation (called faecal impaction).

Is Movicol better than lactulose?
The use of Movicol may help avoid future secondary care activity because it delivers more successful treatment in primary care. It is possible that because of Movicols better efficacy, relative to lactulose, that patients may need less of this particular laxative.

When should I stop taking Movicol?
Dont worry – soft stools mean MOVICOL has started to work. However, if the poo becomes very runny or diarrhoea (see Stool Type 7 on the chart in this leaflet), you should stop taking your medicine until the runny poo stops. Then start again using fewer sachets.

When should I take Movicol liquid?
This medicine can be taken at any time with or without food. This product must be diluted before use. A dose of Movicol Liquid Orange flavour is 25 ml liquid diluted in 100 ml of water. Take this 1–3 times a day according to the severity of your constipation.
